Weaving

On monday, as part of the residency at the Textile Arts Center we had a short class to introduce us to Weaving. I had never done this before and the technical aspects of how a loom works and how to set it up went right over my head. But when i sat down on the loom and started working it just felt like such a simple and relaxing process. I must say I enjoyed it very much and want to learn more about it.

Seing the final product is so rewarding. I can't believe it came out so beautiful on my first try. Of course there are tons of mistakes but i love how the mistakes look.

Artist Residency at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn

Last week I started a six months residency at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn. This is why i've been neglecting a little my blog. I've been busy moving in and getting used to working in a studio outside of my home which I haven't done since college. It's been great so far. I love having a place where i can use the walls to pin up larger drawings and my work and where i have no distractions.

Here is another photo of the place before i started to put all my stuff in it.

This photo shows a tittle of the process i'm making moving in. I expect more work on the walls as i start making new work.

This is just a glimpse of an exercise we did this weekend. It was a lot of fun. I'll be posting more stuff later once i start to get some work done.

New embroidery kits

I just listed on my shop some new products I've been meaning to list for a while now. I've gotten in the past people asking me if I sell patters or kits of some of my embroideries. I had thought about it but hadn't done it yet. I wish i had been able to list these guys before the holidays as i think they can make very cute gifts. Anyways, I've listed 4 kits so far and more are coming soon.

This one is called "Through the window". It's a little scene of a cat looking through a window at a bird in a tree. This can only mean trouble.

This embroidery pattern is for beginners and intermediate embroiderers. In it you will find everything you need to accomplish the project.

Back from the holidays

I think i had the craziest holiday vacation ever. Or better said i hadn't had a vacation like this since i was a kid. I went to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. I am a huge fan of Harry Potter and this was a treat for me. It was crazy busy. There where too many people and it was hard to walk around but i was so excited about seing all the shops and rides that i didn't mind all the craziness. They did such a great job on capturing so many of the details from the book and movies. The castle was so amazing!

Even with all the craziness i managed to take pictures of some magical pins and needles.

Love this feather quill pens. Managed to buy one for myself. And a wand too! Geek alert!!

Ok, so now that i am back at home i have some new products that I'm putting on my shop. I'll have a post later this week with an update.

This is something new that i'm trying with some of my pieces. I'm adding a background to this piece because i wanted to give some depth and atmosphere to it. It's taking me a bit of time trying to figure out how to make the stitches in for the background look apart from the character in the foreground.

I tried many colors but one of the things about embroidery is that the stitches have texture an that makes them stand out and not recede as i want them. I'm kind of trying to make the piece look Like a painting. But I think it's kind of working because of the absence of stitches in the foreground that makes the character stand out from the background.

Lately i've been a little bit scattered. I've been trying to work on 4 projects at the same time and it's been difficult to figure out what times I should work on which and then i end up working less on all of them together. Also keeping up with all the colors that i'm using for each project has been a little bit of a challenge. I have so many colors that they all seem to blent into a large double rainbow.

And then, yesterday i went to the store i always get my threads and totally forgot to buy one color that i really needed to work on one of my pieces. This is after i changed my mind like 3 times and stitched and cut out stitches for about 2 days straight. If you are confused of what i'm trying to explain so am i. Arggg... haven't had a very good week, that's what i'm getting at.

So today I decided to get organized. I got this chart from DMC that shows all the colors that they have in order and with their respective numbers. I can see all the range of colors that i need from light to dark per hue. This is really helpful for some of my projects where i need to create graduations. I know its a little OCD but being organized makes me feel better.

To get even MORE organized, i downloaded this app, XStitcher by Coffee Shop Works. I can have an inventory of my DMC threads, have a shopping list and have a list of floss by project. This way i can go to the store and not look suspicious when i'm taking all my threads out and try to find the correct color in the plethora of treads at the store. Also i won't forget any color i need to buy. Will see how this works and if i get more work done next week.

Blue bird, blue eyes and gold thread

Last week i finished working on this blue bird. He looks very handsome sitting on his branch. I really loved working on this guy. Love the colors of blue birds. Blues and oranges go very nice together.

I'm pretty much done with her face. Working on her hair now.

I found this really nice gold thread at the Brooklyn Flee a couple of weeks ago and was really looking forward to using it. Its a bit hard to stitch with. I've tried a couple of different gold and silver threads and i have yet to find some that are easy to work with. But for now I really like the way this one looks. Maybe i'll get used to it ones i work more with it.

Antique pattern library

While doing some research online during this Thanksgiving weekend I stumble upon this amazing collection of antique needlework pattern books. They have everything from Crochet, knitting, tatting, netting, embroidery, needle lace, beading and other needlework patterns. You can download pdf files of the books. The site is not so great looking but if you go to Catalog and then click on technique you should be able to search easier.

I love looking through all the patterns and illustration in these books. Some of the covers are really great. Some of the books have ads in them. The one below is one of my favorites. For someone that has made ads for a living (i mean me) i some how find this ad refreshing. It is so simple and it fits so well within the book. Now a days all ads need to screen at you buy, buy, buy!!!

Short cuts

This weekend i took a class at The Center for Book Arts called Short Cuts with artist Beatrice Coron. It was such a fun class. In the class we learned different cutting techniques on paper to create illustrations, collages, pop-ups and paper sculptures.

I was interested in taking this class because in a way i'm starting to use similar techniques in my work on fabric and was hoping to experiment a little on paper before moving into my fiber work.

This was such a simple exercise but lots of fun. Basically we cut shapes into a square and glued it back together forming a different shape.

This came from an image of a needle lace photo i found online and then started cutting the design on a black piece of paper.

This is a little pop-up pocket theater of Little Red Ridding Hood.

This are some of the pieces of the stage before i glued it together.

Here the stage is done and all it needs are its tiny characters.

This was my favorite project of the class. It took me a while to put it together but it was so much fun to do!

Details of transfer on black fabric

I'm going to start working on more than one project at the time from now on. I'm hoping that working this way while help me have more work done faster. I always work on things that take a long time to finish. The last project i finished, Unthreading, took me about 2 months to complete. Tree Girl is taking me about the same time as well.

This next project which I'm showing some of the details of the transfer in this post I think it is going to take me a very long time. I think I'm a little bit over my head with this one. Most of the piece is going to be done in cutwork an it measures about 30 x 15 inches. Bigger that i usually work on. And its mostly black thread on black fabric which can make it hard to see while stitching.

Oh, by the way I love this product. I can't believe that it took me so long to figure out that they sell this in rolls. I've been using one sheet of white paper for a while now. What was i thinking!!

Blue bird and satin stitches

I'm excited about working on this blue bird for the Tree Girl piece. Think i got all the right colors for it.

Almost done with the tree. I like working on satin stitches when doing trees. It's nice to see all the different greens together. This picture doesn't show the right color of the green. I took the picture at night and used the ugly yellow light in my studio. When i'm done with the tree i'll get some better detail picture in daylight.

Last week I went to the Penguin Threads Book Series launch party at Purl Soho.

Penguin the book publisher commissioned illustrator Jillian Tamaki to illustrate and embroider the covers for 3 Penguin classics. Emma, The Secret Garden and Black Beauty. At the event they had on display her embroideries and tons of books for purchase. They also talk about the process of and the reason they decide to make these covers using embroidery.

It was a great event but the place was so crowded you couldn't even move around. I only managed to take few picture of the pieces but i got to see them up close and they are so beautiful and have so many details. I think my favorite was the Black Beauty cover. The details inside the horse are so beautifully done, and i love his mane.

Unthreading

I'm so happy with the way this piece looks. I was so nerves before but now i'm so excited about all the ways i could use this technique. I have a couple of different ideas on how to display her but right now this is how she look in my studio. I love how she is coming apart at the bottom and i also love all the loose threads. Thats why i titled her Unthreading. In these two detail photos you can really see the shadows of the cut fabric on the wall.

New website

Finally my new site is up. I am so glad it's done. Finally I found a place that allows me to build my site with minimal coding or no coding at all and its just so simple to update. For years i kept going back and forth with different designs and trying to build it myself and it just never looked right and updating was a pain. Now i can just concentrate on my work and add more project to my portfolio.

A while back i did a little sampler call Tree Girl. A lot of people loved it and got so many great comments about it that i've decided to make a bigger version of it. The truth is that i also really love this illustration and i've been wanting to give her more time and effort. I'm going to do some cutwork and crewel work on this piece. I'm very excited!!

Cutting fabric

I finished stitching this piece this week and started cutting the fabric. I was so nervous about how this was going to look but I needed to get this done for the show last night. I was amazed that i was able to get this done yesterday and i'm so happy with the end result. Here are some photos i took while i was cutting the fabric out. I still need to get some photos of the final piece. Hopefully i will be able to take some photos this week end. After seeing the finished product I am so excited about the possibilities of cutwork. My head is already full of ideas and things i could. Now the only thing to do is work work work!!

Medieval needlework and embroidery

I went to the Medieval Festival this weekend at Fort Tryon Park. I love going to this festival for many reasons. One is that is in my neighborhood so I can just walk there instead of taking lots of train on the weekend to get to a festival. I also love that for me it starts the fall season or halloween season. I love looking at all the people with crazy costumes. I took few picture this time but i did get some pictures of a one of the exhibitors showing samples of needlework and embroidery done in that period of time.

Love the white work in this photo. I will try learning this technique one of these days.

The unicorn sampler in this photo is really beautiful. I'm not sure what this is called but its some kind of cover for a book i think.

New work

This is a new piece i'm going to start to work on soon. For now i just traced it on to the fabric and it is waiting on my table for me to start. I'm still trying to finish The Twins before i start something new. But maybe i can work on both at the same time. I'm trying to figure out how to organized my day in order to work on more than one thing at the time and feel like I've accomplished something at the end of the day.

What is it like to have a cat in the studio? Well, the painting above and the artist quote sums it up. The other day while i was taking picture for my shop, my cat decided he needed to be involved in the photoshoot.

He looks a little scary in this photo but he is just yawning.

The Twins - work in process

This is what i'm working on right now. This piece depicts a landscape with one of my strange looking trees.
Note: see that little guy sleeping on the table? he is such a good assistant, isn't he? He has been sleeping on that corner of the table all summer.

Here I started making the stitches of the background. Adding a background to my creatures is something new i'm starting to work on. Here i'm adding some mountains, and a far away landscape.

This is a more recent photo where i'm almost done stitching the body of the tree. I still have a lot of the background to figure out as i'm trying to give the piece some perspective. I have a lot more stitches to go.

Stitching at the park

It's been so nice and warm lately that i decided to instead of working at home i wanted to try and stitch outside. I have never done any embroidery in public so this was a new experience. On friday i went with my sister to Governors Island. I took my work with me and worked on it while sitting on a blanket at the park. I loved it.

On monday we went to Fort Tryon Park which is where the Cloisters is.

This little guy helps me keep organized.

This is the view from where we where sitting. I love this park. I think it's the highest part in Manhattan and it has a nice view of the river and parts of the city. There's alway a nice breeze coming from the river and nice large trees and gardens.

While stitching at the park this little guy was roaming around. He is either a gopher or a groundhog. I always get confused. He was cute anyway. He says hello!

More stitching

This is the new piece i'm working on. It's the companion to this one. I'm so happy with the way it's coming along. I've been wanting to embroidered butterfly wings for a while but hadn't found the right imagery and concept to do it.

Here in these last images i started adding the blue spots on the butterfly wings.

I'll post soon images of the 2 finished pieces. Let's see how they'll look together. The idea is to show them side by side. We'll see.

Letterpress in Brooklyn

Yesterday I went with some of my coworkers to a small studio in brooklyn to learn how to print with letterpress. It was so much fun. I've done other printing in the past but not letterpress and i must say that i loved the process. I will definitely try to come up with some projects in the future where i can use letterpress.

New books and zines for sale

I just listed new zines and accordion books to my shop. The accordion books are a limited edition of 12. Each one of this 12 books was bound and printed by me. All the books are signed.

The zines are collections of ink drawings from my sketchbook.

New embroidery in process

This is a new piece i've been working on. It's been a while since i've worked on an embroidery and it feels good to get back to it. I have a couple of projects that i'm working on at the same time and I feel like i don't have enough time to work on all of them.

But finally i started working on this embroidery and will try to make the time to finish it soon. I'm going to try something different with this piece. Hope it works out. I'll post pictures soon.

I'm still working on the Whoo ooh (Owl girl) story. I'm still not sure where the story is going, but it's going somewhere. It's like I'm the owl girl discovering things as the story goes along. We'll see what i discover at the end.

MoCCA Fest

I was finally able to post some pictures of MoCCA this week. After the Fest I was so tired and busy preparing for my vacation that I didn't have time to write a post about it. It was a great experience. It was my first time doing an event like this, but i had lots of fun and learned a lot. I had so much fun that i already got a table for next year! MoCCA Festival

This year I'm participating in the MoCCA Festival. The festival is a fundraiser for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. Here is some information about the event:

The MoCCA Festival will take place over April 9-10, 2011 at the Lexington Avenue Armory located at 68 Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets. The annual two-day event attracts thousands of comic art lovers and creators from around the globe to celebrate the world's most popular art form in the heart of New York City. Since 2002 the MoCCA Festival offers a unique venue to experience comics, mini-comics, web comics, graphic novels, animation, posters, prints, original artwork and more. Each year, the Festival invites dozens of established and emerging creators, scholars, and other experts to participate in two days of lecture/discussion panels on a variety of comics and cartoon topics. For 2011, the panels and programs are being organized by Brian Heater (The Daily Crosshatch).

I'll have a table at the event where I'm showing some of my art work. I've been working like crazy making books and comics. I'm really exited as this is the first time I'm participating in an event like this. Here's a preview of what you'll see at my table.

This is one of my favorite panels so far. It's the first time we see the one who answers the owl girl's calls... the mysterious owl. He is looking at the girl and we are looking at him but we don't see his face. I enjoyed drawing him. I can't wait to draw his face.

Sad Bloom Print

Have you ever wonder if plants have feelings? If they get sad or happy or if they cry or laugh? This specimen of flower has a permanent state of never-ending sadness therefore the name Sad Bloom. She cries constantly and it's been said that her tears have been used to cure the ills of the heart. Ironically her tears cannot cure her own sadness.

Ladybug Bloom Print

This specimen of plant is called Ladybug Bloom because of its striking resemblance to the insect know as ladybug or ladybird. The plant resemble this insect in that it grows a beetle shape flower with scarlet wings with black spots. The plant's leaves also resemble the color and spots of the fancy little bug.

Third set of storyboards for the owl girl story

These are the storyboards for pages 9 and 10 of the owl girl story. In the first pages that I posted earlier here and here, the owl girl had hatched from an egg, awakened and started exploring. She wonders through the woods trying to discover the source of a bird call that she hears. In the pages above she discovers an entrance in a tree an decides to walk in.

When I started drawing this story on my sketchbook I started with quick thumbnails of the pages, 2 full pages in one sketchbook page. I've decided to start drawing one page in each sketchbook page and do more detail work than I would usually do with thumbnails. It feels good working a little bigger.

Inspiration for the comic story that i'm working on: Remedios Varo

Creation of the Birds, 1957 by Remedios Varo

Since September I've been posting the progress of the latest comic story I'm working on. I posted the thumbnails of the first 8 pages of the story and some of the finished panels for the first 3 pages. I decided to do all the finished work in graphite pencil instead of ink and watercolor as on my previous 2 books. I wanted to have this soft and almost dream like quality to the story. I also wanted to spend time with the rendering and the details plus i just love drawing with graphite pencils. It's a very time consuming process but I get the results I want.

Anyway, the reason for this post is to share one of my inspirations for this story. The story is about an "Owl girl" who hatches from an egg, awakens an begins to discover and explore the world around her (more of the story to come later on). What inspired me to create this character was a painting by one of my favorite artists of all times. Creation of the Birds by Remedios Varo is by far my favorite painting from the artist.

Remedios Varo (1908-1963) was a Spanish-Mexican surrealist artist. You can read more about her here. I love her work. Her paintings are magical narratives that take me to a wonderful surreal world. Creation of the Birds is one of those paintings that I can't stop thinking about. The first time I saw it I just couldn't help imagining this whole story and world around them. I think thats what her painting do. They open up a world with so many character and stories full of magic and mystery.

There's a wonderful book about Remedios Varo that I recombend to anyone that likes her work. Unexpected Journeys by Janet A. Kaplan.

Comic book class

I'm taking a comic book class this fall at sva which i'm very exited about. I've had this idea for a story for a long time in my head but hadn't been able to put it down on paper. Haven't been able to focus on it lately. So i decided to take this class and start drawing. I have my first set of rough thumbnail drawings down.

The main character is an owl girl. I'm not sure were the story is going but I'm excited about it. This page of my sketchbook shows 4 pages of the story. For the class i'll be making six finished pages but i believe this story is going to take me more that those six pages to tell. I'm going to try to post my process as much as i can.

The opening for the show was last friday. I wish i had been able to go and see all the great work. I love teeny tiny art. There are some images of the show in the gallery's flickr pool.

A little embroidered story

This little series its on its way to the Three Graces Gallery for there 7th Teeny Tiny Art Show in Portsmouth, NH. I'm so excited about being able to show this series together! This series is part of a longer story that i drew a while back. I like the idea about being able to show a little glimpse of it. I love drawing stories and showing little embroidered narratives like this is something that I want to do more of.

Cat - Brooch
This little pin was inspired by my cat. I love drawing him. His the perfect model.

Mushroom - Brooch
I love embroidering little mushrooms.

Mandrake - Brooch
A plant that dreamt of being human. This piece was inspired by one of my favorite movies of all times, Pan's Labyrinth. In the film, the faun tells Ofelia (the main character) to place a mandrake root in a bowl of fresh milk underneath her mother's bed. She must also feed the mandrake 2 droops of blood a day in order to restore her mother's health. This piece was made for the Indie Free Spirits Team Challenge.

Sitting Cat - Brooch
This little pin was inspired by my cat of course. He loves to sit in front of me while I'm working and look at me for hours.

My embroidery floss collection

I've tried many different ways of organizing my embroidery floss and i've found that this is the best way. It takes some time at the beginning to put all the thread in the bobbins and to number them and pin them up on the board by color. But after doing this it just makes my life easier. The board hangs next to my table so its convenient to look for the colors that i need for a project. It can hold about 130 colors.

And I find that it looks very pretty too!

This piece captures a random moment in time. It was hand stitched by me with cotton thread on fabric. The piece is framed in a wooden embroidery hoop. It measures approximately 5.5 inches. It is now available at my shop. The piece on white fabric made it to the front page yesterday!

for a rainy day - color pencil vs embroidery

From all the mediums i've worked on, embroidery and color pencil are the ones I've loved the most. Both mediums give me the same immersive experience. The final product is very different though. Embroidery has a very tactile feel to it while color pencil has a very soft and dreamy look.

Embroidering

I started working on this piece and decided to record the process. The video came out a little blurry and the camera kept making this weird noise while recording. Any way, it was a little test. I'm thinking of getting a better camera and recording more of the process. I'll take some photos of the finished piece and post them later.

I took some pictures at an Orchid Nursery when i went to visit my parent in Florida during the holidays. Orchids are so strange. I was so inspired. I love strange plants. i posted the photos on facebook. You can see the photos here even if you don't have a facebook account.
